To add to what pdavda said, here's my tip. Avoid black for inner borders on objects, if you take a look at all the best shading, black is used only when absolutely needed to convey a sense of seperation. If you take a look at tutorials he explains it quite well.
Hey there, thanks for the comment on Floppy Disk. As for the shading, the best thing to do is to look at other peoples work and see the way they have shaded it and then try and learn the techniques from there. After you've seen the way to do it then you can have a go yourself, if you are using paint then the best way to shade something is to double click on the colour you are using, click on Define Custom Colours and then a bar will appear on the right with the particular colour you have selected and all the different shades from light to dark. Hope this was of some help.
